Learning a Song

We begin with a melody and learn the timing. Chords are added. Chords are changed. Ornamentation is added.

Each step can be very satisfying to a student. (As students advance, they return to simple melodies, keeping them up-to-date in their repertoires.)

Here is a demonstration
with the folk song "The Water's Wide."

DID YOU KNOW?
Two important aspects of any song are TUNE and TIMING. The same notes, played with different timing, become two different pieces.

Think about it! Play a scale downward (high c through lower c) add a few pauses, and you have "Joy to the World." The timing makes all the difference.
